Crinum bulbispermum: A Beautiful and Fragrant Flower

Crinum bulbispermum is a stunning bulbous plant that stands out in the spring and summer with its delicate, blue- to grey-green leaves that cascade around the plant. The large bulbs, measuring 8-10 cm in width, have a distinctive neck and are covered in papery scales that protect them from drying out during the winter months.

In the spring, the plants begin to bloom, producing heavily scented flowers that are often described as "sickly-sweet" and are pollinated by insects. The flowers are followed by large, fleshy seeds that contain a papery covering that turns dry as the seeds mature. As the seeds ripen, the flower stem becomes heavy and keels over, releasing the seeds onto the ground where they immediately begin to germinate.

The foliage of Crinum bulbispermum grows up to 0.5 m tall, with flowering stems reaching up to 1 m and a spread of over 1 m in mature plants. In the autumn, the leaves turn yellow to brown and papery, remaining as a mulch around the bulbs to return nutrients to the soil and protect them from winter drying.

Growing Conditions

Crinum bulbispermum prefers full sun with plenty of water in the spring and summer. It thrives in deep, heavy soils that retain moisture well during the growing season. Plant the bulbs with the top of the bulb just above the soil surface and keep moist until the flowers have finished blooming. Withhold water during the dormant seasons of autumn and winter.

Care and Maintenance

This plant is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate periods of drought during the growing season without adverse effects. It is also frost hardy and can tolerate icy weather. However, in areas with extreme temperatures, it's recommended to use containers to protect the plants from freezing ground.

Propagation and Pest Control

Crinum bulbispermum can be easily propagated from seed, which should be planted fresh. The seeds can be sown directly into the garden or in deep trays. To prevent damage from Amaryllis caterpillars, ensure that these pests do not get the opportunity to burrow down into the bulb. An organic compound for caterpillar control is available for those who prefer to avoid using poisonous chemicals.
